School Profile
Pollard Meadows School and area were named after the Pollard brothers who settled in Edmonton in 1898. Although Yukon gold was their goal, they decided to settle on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Here they made bricks, many of which were used in Edmonton area buildings such as Rutherford House. They also developed the distinctive “klinker” brick. Today, on the south bank of our river, just west of the High Level Bridge, actual remnants of old kilns, kitchens, and a barrel pit are still in evidence.
Pollard Meadows School opened in September of 1981 with an enrolment of 282 students. Enrolment steadily increased to a peak of approximately 600 students in the mid-1980s. Today the school is organized to provide learning for approximately 370 students, Kindergarten through Grade 6, including two special needs classes and, beginning September 2008, classes in the Cogito alternative program (K – 3).
Instructional Focus Statement
A school-wide effort to have all Pollard Meadows students show measurable growth in their ability to read for meaning across the curriculum, through the implementation of a variety of best reading practices. Growth will be measured by the H.L.A.T. reading scores, provincial achievement tests, and school performance-based assessments.
